Join our Board

Mile High HBCU Weekend, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to building community among HBCU alumni and expanding awareness of Historically Black Colleges and Universities for students and families across Colorado.

As we continue to grow our impact beyond our annual Mile High HBCU Weekend, we are recruiting committed, community-minded leaders to join our Board of Directors and help guide the organization into its next phase.

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking individuals who:

  • Are HBCU alumni

  • Currently reside in the Greater Denver Metro area

  • Are passionate about education access, community building, and HBCU advocacy

  • Are willing to use their voice, network, and experience to help advance our mission

  • Can commit time to monthly board meetings and periodic event planning support
     

Prior board experience is welcome but not required. We value lived experience, leadership, and a willingness to contribute.

Board Openings

Secretary (Board Officer)

The Secretary supports strong governance and organizational accountability by ensuring accurate documentation and communication.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Record and maintain board meeting minutes and official records

  • Support compliance with bylaws and governance documentation

  • Assist with board communications and record retention

  • Partner closely with the Board President on administrative matters

Treasurer (Board Officer)

The Treasurer provides financial oversight and helps ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee financial reporting and budget tracking

  • Review monthly financial summaries

  • Support fundraising strategy from a financial perspective

  • Ensure responsible stewardship of nonprofit funds
     

A background in finance, accounting, or nonprofit budgeting is helpful but not required.

General Board Members

General board members play an active role in advancing the organization’s mission through leadership, advocacy, and relationship-building.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as ambassadors for Mile High HBCU Weekend, Inc.

  • Help identify and connect us with sponsors, partners, and community leaders

  • Support fundraising, programming, and outreach efforts

  • Participate in strategic discussions and planning

  • Assist with major events and initiatives as needed

Committment

  • Monthly board meetings (typically 60–90 minutes)

  • Occasional ad-hoc meetings leading up to major events

  • Participation in at least one committee or focus area (as the board grows)
     

This is a working board, and members are expected to be engaged, responsive, and collaborative.

Together with like-minded individuals, we will work to enhance HBCU education pathways for Colorado students and foster a robust alumni community in the Denver metro area. By contributing to scholarships and educational outreach, you will help build lasting relationships with community leaders and organizations, driving statewide impact and change across our education system.
